Welcome to Texas Star Shooting! My name is Vicki Hanak and I am a female firearms instructor (the one in the hat ;-) with a passion for firearm safety and personal protection education. I have a B.S. and M.Ed. from Texas A&M University. I was a teacher and public school administrator for many years, and married a law enforcement officer. Because of that, my first experience with firearms was born out of necessity. With a Texas Ranger husband, loaded pistols were a part of everyday life. Not being educated and knowledgeable, as well as comfortable and proficient with firearms would have been an unsafe combination in our home. Therefore, with a well trained and amazing teacher~my husband~ so began my firearms training. Soon after, I got my CHL and became even more aware of the need to be able to protect myself and my family. After all, I can't have a Texas Ranger at my side 24/7, right? ;-)
Many of my friends and others that I met, expressed interest in learning or wanting to carry concealed, but had a number of 'reasons' that they could, would, or should not. Many of them said that they 'only wished they had someone that could help them learn or to teach them.' A good number of my female friends expressed how uncomfortable they would be going to a class, and that they would 'not have the first idea of what to do,' saying it would just be too embarrassing for them. Not only was I teaching them (informally) but my husband and I were also constantly educating our sons about firearm use and safety. Their safety around firearms was of utmost importance and a constant concern for us. We realized that just as education and practice is our best 'gun safe,' so it is for our boys as well.
Years later, and with great support from my husband (who has since retired from the Rangers and is now the Sheriff of our county) along with formal firearms instructor training, I am a trained and certified firearms instructor. I now provide that much needed service to men, women and children that wish to arm themselves...with not only a gun, but with EDUCATION and KNOWLEDGE.
Education , training and practice is the best way to be safe and responsible when it comes to firearms. If you decide to get your CHL so that you may carry concealed, it is absolutely necessary for you to be not only proficient, but comfortable and knowledgeable about your gun(s). If you have firearms in your home, but do not think you personally want to carry, or if you have children in your home and you do not know the best way to train them about firearms, it is still the safest and most practical thing to do to educate yourself and to become comfortable with those firearms, and I am at your service to do just that! Many topics that are taught in these classes emphasize being aware and ready to deal with situations that would have you use a firearm as a last resort. Pay attention to this statement. The use of a firearm is a LAST RESORT. Often times, there are many things that you can, and should, do first if you find yourself in a bad situation. Worst case scenario, you find yourself with no choice and need to use your firearm to protect yourself or a loved one, you need to be prepared and knowledgeable enough to do so.
There is something for everyone at Texas Star Shooting, and I recommend signing up for the class that best suits your needs or booking individual instruction. I look forward to teaching you, and remember...in the firearms world, you can never have enough practice or enough ammo!
